PLAY BALL

PLAY BALL

Alone

In the center of the diamond
Waiting
For my cleats
A rectangular dimension
Spiked, in its mid-rift
Hammered, into the ground
The rubber
rigidly raised
guarding the mound
stepped on
pushed off
coated thoughtlessly with dirt
grateful
for the slightest favor of dusting
Does it hear the jeers?
The cheers
Hey, hey
Little bingo
Egotistical pitchers
Never share the glory
The ivory tile
Suffers
As the heartless cleats
Claw and stab
for added velocity
a rubber magic throw rug
holding the prayerful pitcher
unbiased
giving its all to those who would stand
on its shoulders
the herculean rubber
holding the flint of a nations pastime
mute to the game
just doing its job
undaunted by pain or pressure plays
Oh, pitching rubber
Hold me and the rest
Willing and able
A capable table
Balance me, balance me
With your consistency
Oh, wondrous pale rubber ridge
Giving piggyback in the park
You are perfection
The life
The resurrection.
